When serum calcium levels are low, PTH is secreted by the chief cells of the parathyroid gland, stimulating osteoclast activity and bone resorption thus the release of calcium. Measuring serum or plasma PTH levels is important for patients in chronic renal failure. Synthetic N-terminal truncated PTH peptides [e.g. PTH(2–34), PTH(3–34) and PTH(7–84)] do not cross‐react with the detection antibodies used in second‐generation PTH assays. |
