| Scientific Background | The erythropoietin (epo) receptor is a member of the cytokine receptor family. It is expressed almost exclusively on erythroid precursor cells and controls the development of red blood cells. The epo receptor has no intrinsic kinase activity, but binds intracellular tyrosine kinases to elicit its signals. Alterations in the transmission of the signalling cascade lead to clinically abnormal red blood cell production. |
