Nipah Virus Antibodies Proteins

Nipah Virus Antibodies Proteins

Nipah virus infection is a zoonotic illness that is transmitted to people from animals and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly from person-to-person. In infected people, it causes a range of illnesses, from asymptomatic (subclinical) infection to acute respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis.
The case fatality ratio ranges from 40 to 100%. In India, the first Nipah virus disease outbreak was reported in Siliguri town in 2001, followed by a second outbreak in Nadia district in 2007, both in West Bengal state. In 2018, an outbreak was reported in Kozhikode district, and in 2019, another outbreak was reported in Kochi district, both in Kerala state. Nipah virus, also known as NiV, is an encephalitic henipavirus that causes mild to severe illness in pigs and humans. Currently, fruit bats (flying foxes) are the identified animal reservoir and can spread the infection to humans and pigs. Infection control measures typically involve avoiding close contact with infected animals or their body fluids (i.e., saliva and urine). Unfortunately, there have also been documented cases of person-to-person transmission.
The diagnosis of the enveloped, negative-strand RNA virus can occur both during illness and following recovery. During infection, real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) can be used to identify viruses from varied sample sources, including throat swabs, nasal swabs, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), urine, and blood. At later time points, antibodies can be used to diagnose cases via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs).
Currently, there are no treatments or cures available for Nipah virus infections. Clinical research is still ongoing to test several immunotherapies at various stages of the clinical trial process.
